A Few of the Faces Behind LearnPlatform

The Lea(R)n team

Our co-founder and CEO, Karl, is rather fond of bragging about our team. Aside from adding some flush to our cheeks, it feels good to have a leader who believes in and supports us. He often refers to Lea(R)n as “the best (and most charming) team in edtech,” and while that braggery causes most of us a sincere level of embarrassment and the “charm” is sometimes in short supply before a cup of coffee, this hard-working team is sincerely committed to helping advance learning and providing educators with tools to personalize learning at scale and increase equitable access for all students. Here are a few people who tirelessly strive to make results matter, delight our customers and partners, and are a pleasure to have as teammates.

Q: What is your favorite thing about working at Lea(R)n?

A: I love being part of a collaborative team all working towards a common goal, and watching our customers use data they have collected through LearnPlatform to inform decisions.

Q: What is the coolest thing customers can do with LearnPlatform?

A: IMPACT™. When I was a teacher I always wondered if the edtech products we were using actually had an effect on student achievement, if they were worth the district’s dollars, and if teachers’ opinions of a product were ever taken into consideration. Now we can run an IMPACT Analysis and within minutes see how the product usage correlates with student growth, calculate the cost-effectiveness of an item, and even tie in teacher feedback. How cool is that?!

Q: What is your first or favorite piece of education technology?

A: Padlet was one of my favorite tools to use in my classroom. It is essentially a virtual wall for students to post ideas and work collaboratively on. I found that it replaced bulletin boards, sticky notes, and chart paper and kept a record of my students’ work.

Job Profile: Tina is one of our rock star customer success associates (CSA). As a CSA, she provides ongoing support to Lea(R)n customers through the onboarding and implementation process.

Tina has a passion for helping others meet their educational goals, and creating and promoting quality instructional tools. She received her Bachelor of Science in elementary education from Indiana University and is a Nationally Board Certified teacher. Tina was an elementary teacher for 10 years before entering the edtech field. She has worked as a freelance curriculum designer, developing curriculum for elementary students, as well as professional development materials for adult learners.

Q: What is your favorite thing about working at Lea(R)n?

A: The people! It’s fantastic to come to work and find people committed to a cause, overflowing with ideas and comfortable sharing. I couldn’t ask for a more supportive and capable team to work with.

Q: What is the coolest thing customers can do with LearnPlatform?

A: Once again… the people! LearnPlatform is a great tool, but what sets us apart is the services we provide to ensure that goals are met. By understanding the goals and challenges that edtech leaders face every day, we can tailor our implementation and research to make sure that those leaders exceed their goals and overcome their challenges, with the ultimate goal of building toward student success.

Q: What is your first or favorite piece of education technology?

A: As an early music lover, Cakewalk was an awesome piece of software for putting my musical ideas into reality and being able to hear them, even if back then it was just in midi!

Job Profile: As a district analyst, Kevin creates leads and develops partnership opportunities. He coordinates with potential clients to help identify challenges, strengths and opportunities for growth in the organization. Before joining our team, Kevin was a math and engineering teacher at public high schools in the New Orleans area. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in mechanical engineering and a Master's degree in education.

Ben Gilman: Co-Founder and CTO

Intro song: All along the watchtower, Jimi Hendrix

Q: What is your favorite thing about working at Lea(R)n?

A: I love working on technology that separates the signal from the noise. Lea(R)n is providing educators a tool to clearly quantify the impact (or lack of impact) of their edtech dollars. This will lead to more efficient allocation of education resources which will eventually benefit our entire society.

Q: What do you think is the coolest thing customers can do with LearnPlatform?

A: IMPACT Analysis. IMPACT Analyses transform data into actionable information. In less than 10 minutes, using readily available data, educators can assess the educational and financial impact of specific interventions.

Q: What is your first or favorite piece of education technology?

A: My first piece of edtech was the QBasic programming language. I was introduced to QBasic in an intro to computer science class as a junior in high school. This introduction set the course for my professional career.

Job Profile: Ben is the co-founder and CTO of Lea(R)n. He received his Bachelor of Science in computer science from Principia College and his MBA from Wake Forest University. Ben has spent more than 15 years building software products and has been intimately involved at every level of the software development process. He has co-founded several companies and is an experienced executive and entrepreneur.

As CTO, Ben is responsible for all aspects of the LearnPlatform software platform. He leads our team of developers, manages day-to-day development tasks and guides the overall product strategy.

Gretchen Parker: Marketing Communications Specialist

Gretchen Parker photo

Intro song: Eye of the Tiger, Survivor

Q: What is your favorite thing about working at Lea(R)n?

A: I love the amazing work we do — helping educators get smarter about the technology they use. I am amazed at the amount of edtech out there, with limited ways to actually see if it’s helping kids in their classrooms achieve better outcomes. I am constantly telling friends and family about the ways we help solve this problem — both by giving teachers a voice and showing schools and districts ways to save money and make informed decisions about their edtech usage.

A big bonus of working here — the amazing team we’ve assembled. Everyone is a rock star, with the ability to walk the fine line of work-life-play balance.

Q: What is the coolest thing customers can do with LearnPlatform?

A: One of the first things that resonated with me when I started working at Lea(R)n was the commitment to keeping educators at the core of our mission. I love that any educator has the ability to create an account (for free), grade products, explore others and network with teachers across the country. I tell every educator I meet to sign up – it’s the best of LinkedIn and TripAdvisor combined in one edtech hub designed specifically for them.

Q: What was your first or favorite piece of education technology?

A: Beyond the classic 90s Oregon Trail indoor recess experience most of my generation remembers, the first piece of edtech that resonated with me was an outer space math program we used during computer lab in elementary school. The ability to solve equations while playing a game was inspiring and sparked my continued love of math.

My favorite education technologies today have to be the GDrive and Adobe suites. I started using both in college for group collaboration and design work, which I’ve continued in my professional space. They are incredible pieces of technology that have become staples in my role at Lea(R)n.

Job Profile: Gretchen is one of the marketing communications specialists for Lea(R)n. A graduate of Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia, Gretchen attributes small classes and the college’s unique, single-gender atmosphere to her success with small companies, particularly nonprofits and startups. Her passion for marketing began with a PR project centered on the local food bank and has expanded with each opportunity.

As a marketing communications specialist, Gretchen works closely with the team to tell our story, sharing our successes and those of our clients. She co-manages company outreach including social media presence, outward marketing opportunities, design elements and the website.
